The journey began at Hancock, Massachusetts, on August 17 and continued to other Shaker communities throughout the Northeast: Enfield, Connecticut (twice), Shirley and Harvard, Mass. (twice each); Alfred and Sabbathday Lake (Gloucester), Maine; Enfield and Canterbury, New Hampshire The travelers also visited Lynn, Mass., where they enjoyed the ocean; other Shakers seemed to have also been there on vacation. They returned home on October 22. Unnumbered pages at the end of the volume contain a list of names of the ministry in the eastern societies in 1850 and a list of the secondary names of communities (e.g., the City of Peace is Hancock, Mass.; the Holy Mount is New Lebanon, N.Y.). The diary gives some information about what they saw at each village, such as the different buildings and shops. The diary comments on the pickling operations at Harvard, the knitting machines at Enfield, N.H., and the various activities in the Sister's Shop at Canterbury, including sewing books. A highlight of the visit to Harvard was seeing Square, or Mother's, House, the building in which Mother Ann had lived during her sojourn in the area. At Enfield, N.H., they saw a great curiosity: "shadows of animals brought to view by microscope glasses." The diary also lists some of the people they met. Comments are made about the worship services. The diary also gives some details about their transportation (for example, railroad to this place, then by carriage to village). Compare this with ASC 833, an different account covering part of the same journey. Brother Thomas kept ASC 833. Sister Wealthy Storer gives just a bare bones account of the journey in her diary, ASC 851.
